On the jetties that carry the oil from shore tanks to the ships, the loading arms provide the connection between the ship and the jetty. These loading arms sometimes reach as high as 25 meters above their base plate and then even are positioned at pedestals of sometimes 8 meters high again.
This makes the loading arms as heavy as 25 tons and the location itself is at a very small section, in between ship and jetty pipelines.

This again makes it a very difficult, if not impossible, location for a regular crane to reach in case of replacement of the loading arms, which in that case is usually performed by a barge crane.
Deployment of a barge crane however poses more than a challenge for jetties situated at open water locations where ocean swells roll in and wave breakers often are not present. Crane barges planning to lift loading arms are confronted with movements caused by the swell and waves, which makes lifting off the loading arms a particularly awkward job with an extreme high damage risk factor, as many have found out the hard way. Especially when the loading arms must be lifted and shipped to an onshore workshop for overhaul or maintenance, rental costs of the lifting barge can prove very expensive and the whole operation is time consuming.
