FG HPS – FG Hydroshield Protection System

Hydroshield while flare is still in operation

Many flare installations have their flare structures in service for many years. In some cases inspection and maintenance of the structures can not be carried out without a complete refinery shutdown.FG International Holland BV has developed an innovative method of inspection and maintenance of flare structures while the flare is still live.

Using abseiling techniques, the flare structure can be completely inspected, while

the flare is still in operation. The risks involved are fully understood, analysed and evaluated prior to the start of the works and this analysis forms the basis on which precautions and safety measures are taken in order to ensure the safety of all personnel involved in the operations, in case of an emergency outburst.

Hydroshield protection system method

First a hydroshield is installed at the top of the flare structure, under the protection of water cannons and fire engines. A mobile water reservoir powered by an independent generator allows FG to keep the FG HPS in operation at all times

After installation of the hydroshield due to the curtain of water that is between the crew and the flame the crew gets enough time to safely descend to ground level from the position they have been working at in the flare. The spray of water absorbs the infrared radiation and burning heat.

The crew working with the FG HPS maintains direct radio contact with the refinery’s control room in order to be able to act immediately in case of an emergency.
